Experience the best of Madrid
Madrid is Spain's sunny, sociable capital, home to great art museums, royal palaces, leafy parks and tapas bars that stay busy past midnight.

Three great galleries line the Paseo del Prado: the Prado Museum with Velázquez and Goya, the Reina Sofía with Picasso's Guernica, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza with its sweeping private collection. Beside them, El Retiro Park offers a boating lake, shaded avenues and the glass Palacio de Cristal.
The old heart of the city revolves around Plaza Mayor and the Puerta del Sol, with the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral facing each other to the west. La Latina's tapas bars, Malasaña's cafés and vintage shops, and the literary lanes of the Barrio de las Letras each have a distinct feel, and the Gran Vía cuts through with its grand early twentieth-century façades. The Sunday flea market of El Rastro is a local ritual.
Eating and drinking structure the day: churros with chocolate, fried-squid sandwiches, cocido madrileño and evening rounds of small plates. The finest weather comes in spring and autumn, and in May the festival of San Isidro brings traditional dress and open-air dancing to the city's squares and parks. Toledo, Segovia and El Escorial all make excellent day trips.
