Experience the best of Florence

Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, gathers masterpieces of art and architecture into a compact city of stone streets beside the Arno.

The Duomo, with Brunelleschi's great red-brick dome, Giotto's bell tower and the Baptistery's gilded doors, marks the centre of town. A few streets away, Piazza della Signoria and the Palazzo Vecchio face a loggia full of sculpture, and the Uffizi Gallery holds Botticelli, Leonardo and Raphael. Michelangelo's David stands in the Galleria dell'Accademia.

The Ponte Vecchio, lined with goldsmiths' shops, crosses the river to the Oltrarno, a quieter quarter of artisan workshops, the Pitti Palace and the terraced Boboli Gardens. Climbing to Piazzale Michelangelo at sunset gives the classic view across terracotta roofs. The covered Mercato Centrale near San Lorenzo is a good place to try lampredotto, ribollita, Tuscan cheeses and cured meats.

The city is small enough to cross on foot, which makes it easy to pair with the Chianti hills, Siena, Pisa or San Gimignano. Spring and autumn bring the gentlest weather, and on Easter Sunday a cart packed with fireworks is set alight outside the Duomo in the centuries-old Scoppio del Carro. Winter is cool and calm, a good season for lingering in the galleries.
