Experience the best of Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, dominated by Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak, with black-sand beaches, banana groves and laurel forests.

Tenerife rises from the Atlantic to the 3,715-metre summit of Mount Teide, a volcano whose national park of lava fields, strange rock formations and vast craters is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A cable car climbs most of the way up. The air is so clear that the island hosts astronomical observatories, and stargazing is a pastime in its own right.
The north is green and cooler, with the old university town of La Laguna, the flower-balconied houses of La Orotava and the Anaga forests. The south is dry and sunny, with resorts at Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos, where boats go out to watch pilot whales and dolphins. On the west coast, the cliffs of Los Gigantes and the narrow gorge at Masca are scenic. La Gomera is a ferry ride from the south.
Canarian cooking offers wrinkled potatoes with red and green mojo sauces, fresh fish, goat and gofio, a toasted grain flour. Barraquito, a layered coffee with condensed milk and liqueur, is the island's special drink. The weather stays mild year-round, and clouds often shroud the north while the south basks; spring and autumn are lovely, and the Carnival of Santa Cruz, held before Lent, is a huge party.
