Experience the best of San Sebastián
San Sebastián, or Donostia, is a Basque seaside city around a shell-shaped bay, with a golden beach, a hilltop fort and a pintxo scene known across Spain.

San Sebastián curves around La Concha Bay, a near-perfect shell-shaped inlet with a white-railed promenade and a sheltered city beach. Monte Urgull guards the east end with an old fort, and Monte Igueldo, at the west end, has a funicular and a viewpoint. The Parte Vieja, the old town, was rebuilt after the fire of 1813 and is packed with bars and a baroque basilica.
Zurriola Beach, on the other side of the Urumea River, is the surfers' beach, and at the western tip Eduardo Chillida's sculpture Peine del Viento stands on the rocks, with its steel combs facing the waves. Pasaia and Hondarribia, fishing harbours, and Getaria, with its txakoli vineyards, are close, and the French border towns of Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz are under an hour away.
Pintxos fill the bars of the Parte Vieja, from anchovy and olive skewers called gildas to grilled mushrooms and foie gras, washed down with txakoli or cider poured from a height. Txuleta, a thick beef steak, is grilled over embers, and the region's chefs have won many Michelin stars. The film festival in September and the Jazzaldia in July keep the city busy.
