Experience the best of Rome
Rome layers nearly three thousand years of history into one walkable city, from the Colosseum and Forum to Baroque piazzas and Vatican art.

Ancient Rome is still in plain sight. The Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill sit together at the city's heart, the Pantheon still stands with its open oculus, and fragments of temples and aqueducts turn up between apartment blocks. Across the Tiber, Vatican City holds St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling.
The later city is just as rewarding. Baroque fountains and churches fill the old centre around Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps climb toward the gardens of Villa Borghese, and Trastevere's ivy-hung lanes fill with diners at dusk. Testaccio and Monti are where many Romans eat: cacio e pepe, carbonara, supplì and pizza by the slice, with gelato never far away.
Spring and autumn bring mild weather that suits long days on foot, and each April the city celebrates its legendary birthday with parades of costumed legionaries. Midsummer is hot, and in August many Romans leave for the coast. In any season the city rewards slow wandering, an early start at the famous sites and an evening stroll when the stone glows gold.
