Experience the best of Granada

Granada is an Andalusian city below the Sierra Nevada, home to the Alhambra palace complex, the Moorish Albaicín quarter and a famous tapas habit.

The Alhambra, a hilltop fortress and palace complex built by the Nasrid rulers in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, is one of Spain's most visited monuments, with carved plasterwork, courtyards and pools, and the Generalife gardens beside it. Granada fell in 1492, the last Muslim kingdom in Spain, and the cathedral and Royal Chapel, with the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella, mark that turning point.

Across the valley, the Albaicín quarter climbs in whitewashed lanes to the San Nicolás viewpoint, where the Alhambra glows against the snowy Sierra Nevada. Sacromonte, the hillside of cave homes, is known for flamenco, and the Alcaicería was once the silk market. Mulhacén, the highest peak of mainland Spain, and a ski resort lie within an hour, the Alpujarras villages are to the south, and the Costa Tropical is on the coast.

In Granada, bars still send out a small plate with each drink, something different every round. Local dishes include jamón from Trevélez, broad beans with ham, and the remojón salad of orange and salt cod. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is very hot, and winter can be cold with snow in the mountains.
