Experience the best of Osaka

Osaka is known as Japan's kitchen, a big-hearted port city of neon canals, street food and a grand castle, with Kyoto, Nara and Kobe close by.

Dotonbori, the canal-side entertainment strip, is the city's beating heart, its giant mechanical crab and glowing billboards reflected in the water. Nearby, the covered arcades of Shinsaibashi and the kitchenware street of Doguyasuji draw shoppers, and Kuromon Market tempts with seafood, wagyu skewers and fruit.

Osaka Castle, with its white walls and golden trim, rises above a park of moats and cherry trees. Shitennō-ji is one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples, the retro Shinsekai district gathers around the Tsutenkaku Tower, and the Umeda Sky Building's open-air observatory gives sweeping views. Universal Studios Japan and the Kaiyukan aquarium, with its whale sharks, are favourites with families.

Food defines the city, whose spirit is summed up in kuidaore, to eat until you drop: takoyaki octopus balls, okonomiyaki pancakes, kushikatsu skewers and kitsune udon. Cherry blossom around the castle is a classic spring sight, and in late July the Tenjin Matsuri, one of Japan's great festivals, sends a procession of boats down the river beneath fireworks. Kyoto, the deer park at Nara and Kobe are all a short train ride away.
