Lanzarote is one of the easternmost of the Canary Islands, a volcanic island of lava fields, cones and a dry, sunny climate. Between 1730 and 1736 eruptions buried a number of villages, and Timanfaya National Park preserves that landscape of black and red craters, where guides show how the heat just beneath the ground can boil water. The artist César Manrique shaped much of the island's look, limiting building heights and keeping villages white with green and blue trim.

Manrique's work includes the Jameos del Agua, a lava tube with a pool and concert hall, the Cactus Garden, and the Mirador del Río, a cliff-top lookout over La Graciosa island. The vineyards of La Geria grow grapes in hollows dug into black volcanic grit and protected by low stone walls. Cueva de los Verdes is another lava tube. The beaches of Papagayo in the south have golden sand, and Famara in the north is a long surf beach under cliffs.

Papas arrugadas, small potatoes boiled in salt water and served with red and green mojo sauces, fresh fish, goat cheese and the dry white wine of Malvasía grapes are the tastes of the island. The trade winds keep the temperature mild all year, and there is little rain.
