Seville Cathedral, one of the largest Gothic churches in the world, holds the tomb of Christopher Columbus, and its bell tower, the Giralda, was once the minaret of a great mosque. Next door, the Real Alcázar is a royal palace of Mudéjar courtyards, tilework and gardens, still used by the Spanish royal family.

The Santa Cruz quarter, the old Jewish neighbourhood, is a maze of whitewashed lanes and hidden squares. The Plaza de España curves around a canal in María Luisa Park, with ceramic alcoves for each Spanish province, and the wooden canopy of the Metropol Parasol offers rooftop views. Across the Guadalquivir, Triana is known for ceramics, flamenco and tapas bars.

Tapas are a way of life: jamón, cold salmorejo, fried fish and spinach with chickpeas. Spring is glorious, with the Holy Week processions and the April Fair, autumn is pleasant, and summer is extremely hot. Córdoba and its Mezquita, the white villages of the hills and the port of Cádiz are within easy reach.
