The Burj Khalifa, built to be the tallest building in the world, soars above Downtown, where the Dubai Fountain dances on a lake at its feet and the Dubai Mall spreads out beside it. Along the coast, the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, the palm-shaped island of Palm Jumeirah and the towers of Dubai Marina define a skyline raised within living memory.
The older city tells a different story. Across Dubai Creek, wooden abras ferry passengers between Bur Dubai and Deira, where the gold and spice souks still trade. The restored wind-tower houses of Al Fahidi hold small galleries and cafés, the Dubai Frame looks over old and modern districts at once, and Jumeirah's long public beaches stretch south toward the Marina.
The desert begins quickly beyond the city: dune drives, camel rides and evenings at camps under the stars are classic outings. Food spans Emirati dishes such as machboos and luqaimat, Levantine grills, Indian and Persian cooking and every global cuisine. The cooler months from late autumn to early spring are the most comfortable; summer is intensely hot, and life moves indoors.
