Maharana Udai Singh II founded Udaipur in the sixteenth century, and the City Palace, a cluster of courts and towers built over centuries, rises on the shore of Lake Pichola. Island palaces, Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace, sit in the water, and boats cross the lake at sunset. Jagdish Temple, a Hindu temple with a carved spire and steep steps, stands close to the palace in the old town.
Fateh Sagar lake, to the north, has a garden island, and Saheliyon ki Bari is a garden built for the women of the royal court. The hilltop Monsoon Palace, to the west, looks over the lakes and the Aravalli hills. Kumbhalgarh, a fort with a very long wall, and the intricate Jain temples at Ranakpur lie about two hours to the north, and Chittorgarh's hill fort is a similar drive east.
Menus follow Mewar cooking, with dal baati churma, laal maas, gatte ki sabzi, and ghevar, a honeycombed sweet. Rooftop cafés look out across the lakes in the evening. In the monsoon the lakes fill and the Aravalli hills turn green.
