Bangalore, or Bengaluru, is the garden city of southern India, a technology hub of parks, palaces, pubs and filter coffee on a cool plateau.

Bengaluru, long known in English as Bangalore, is the capital of Karnataka and sits on a plateau about 900 metres up, which gives it a mild climate. The city's nickname, the Garden City, comes from public parks like Cubbon Park and the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, where a glasshouse modelled on London's Crystal Palace holds flower shows. The Vidhana Soudha, the state legislature, is one of its grandest buildings.
Tipu Sultan's wooden summer palace and the Tudor-style Bangalore Palace recall earlier rulers, and the Bull Temple in Basavanagudi has a huge granite Nandi. The city is the centre of India's software industry, and cafés, craft-beer pubs and bookshops fill its neighbourhoods. Nandi Hills, a fortified hilltop, lies north of town, and Mysuru, with its palace, is a few hours to the south-west.
Breakfast is idli, dosa and vada with sambar and coconut chutney, followed by filter coffee in a steel tumbler. Bisi bele bath, a spiced rice and lentil dish, is a local favourite, and ragi mudde, a ball of millet, goes with curries in Karnataka's villages. Evenings stay cool even in the hot weeks of April and May.
