Munnar lies at around 1,500 metres in the Western Ghats of Kerala, at the meeting of three rivers, which is where its name comes from. The hills around town are covered in rolling tea estates planted by British growers in the nineteenth century, and cardamom and pepper grow on the slopes of the Cardamom Hills nearby. A small museum tells the story of the tea industry.
Eravikulam National Park protects the high grasslands where the Nilgiri tahr, a wild mountain goat, lives, and where the neelakurinji shrub blooms in blue once every twelve years. Anamudi, at 2,695 metres, is the highest peak in the Western Ghats. Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and Top Station offer views, and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the dry eastern side.
Kerala cooking appears in every roadside restaurant: appam with vegetable stew, fish curry with coconut, parotta, and sweet payasam. Spice shops sell cardamom and cinnamon. The months from September to March are cool and clear, while the heavy monsoon rains begin in June.
