Experience the best of Kochi
Kochi is a port city on India's Kerala coast, with Chinese fishing nets, Portuguese and Dutch heritage, spice warehouses and backwaters just beyond.

The old quarter of Fort Kochi packs centuries of trade into a small peninsula. Giant cantilevered fishing nets line the shore, St Francis Church is one of the oldest European-built churches in India, and Santa Cruz Basilica stands nearby. In Mattancherry, the Dutch Palace holds royal murals, and the Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town, dating from the 1500s, has a floor of blue Chinese tiles.
Spice merchants still trade pepper, cardamom and ginger from warehouses in Jew Town. Kathakali dance, with its painted faces, is performed in theatres around the old town, and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, an art exhibition held every couple of years, fills old buildings with contemporary work. The backwaters of Alappuzha, with their houseboats, begin within a couple of hours' drive south, and the tea hills of Munnar rise a few hours east.
Kerala cooking is built on coconut, seafood and spices: fish curry with rice, appam pancakes with vegetable stew, prawns and fried pearl spot fish. Banana-leaf feasts mark festivals such as Onam. Humid and warm all year, Kochi is wettest in the monsoon from June to September, and the cooler, drier months from November to February are the most pleasant.
