Jaisalmer rises from the sands of the Thar Desert near India's western border, and the honey-coloured stone of its buildings has earned it the name Golden City. Its fort, founded in 1156 by the Bhati ruler Jaisal, stands on a hill above the town, with houses, shops, temples and guesthouses still inside the walls. It is one of the few forts in India where people still live, and it belongs to the Hill Forts of Rajasthan World Heritage listing.
In the town below, the carved sandstone havelis, merchants' mansions such as Patwon Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli, show lattice windows and balconies of astonishing detail. Gadisar Lake, a reservoir with ghats and shrines, lies to the south, and the royal cenotaphs at Bada Bagh stand to the north. Camel safaris run out to the Sam and Khuri sand dunes, some 40 kilometres from town, and the abandoned village of Kuldhara lies closer in.
Dal baati churma, baked wheat balls served with lentils and sweet crumbled wheat, ker sangri, a dish of desert beans and berries, and lassi are classic Rajasthani foods. Winters, from November to February, are mild by day and cold at night, the best time for the dunes, while summers are scorching. The Desert Festival in February fills the town with folk music and turban-tying contests.
