The Taj Mahal, built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most admired buildings anywhere, its white marble changing colour from dawn to dusk. Its gardens, reflecting pools and inlaid stonework are loveliest early in the morning, and the Mehtab Bagh gardens across the river offer a calm sunset view.

Agra Fort, a red sandstone fortress-palace, holds halls, mosques and the octagonal tower from which Shah Jahan, imprisoned by his son, is said to have gazed at the Taj. The tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, nicknamed the Baby Taj, is a jewel of marble inlay, and Akbar's tomb lies at Sikandra. Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's abandoned red sandstone capital, is a short drive west.

Agra is known for its marble inlay work, leather goods and petha, a translucent sweet made from ash gourd, along with rich Mughlai dishes. October to March brings the most pleasant weather, while summers are very hot and the monsoon follows. Agra forms the Golden Triangle with Delhi and Jaipur.
