Experience the best of Kolkata
Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and the former capital of British India, a river city of colonial buildings, bookshops, sweets and Durga Puja.

Kolkata grew from three villages on the Hooghly River and was the capital of British India until 1911. Colonial landmarks include the Victoria Memorial, a white marble hall set in gardens, St Paul's Cathedral, and the Indian Museum, founded in 1814. The Howrah Bridge, a steel cantilever bridge over the Hooghly, carries enormous crowds, and hand-pulled rickshaws and trams still run in the streets.
College Street holds a huge second-hand book market, with the Indian Coffee House upstairs, and Kumartuli is the potters' quarter where clay idols are made. Dakshineswar Kali Temple and Belur Math stand on the riverbank, Mullick Ghat has a flower market, and the Marble Palace is an old mansion filled with statues and antiques. The Missionaries of Charity have their mother house in the city.
Bengali sweets are a local passion, from rosogolla and sandesh to mishti doi, sweet set yoghurt, and fish, especially hilsa cooked in mustard, comes with rice. The kathi roll began here, and puchka sellers line the corners. Durga Puja each autumn fills the city with elaborate pandals, temporary shrines built with great invention.
