Nafplio sits on the Argolic Gulf in the north-eastern Peloponnese, a town of neoclassical mansions, Venetian houses and flower-hung balconies climbing from the waterfront. It was the first capital of modern Greece, from 1823 to 1834. The Bourtzi, a small castle on an islet, guards the harbour, and Palamidi, a Venetian fortress on a rock above the town, is reached by a long staircase or by road.
Mycenae, with its Lion Gate and royal tombs, and the vast ancient theatre of Epidaurus, famed for its acoustics, are both World Heritage sites within a short drive, as is the massive-walled citadel of Tiryns. Closer to town, the Arvanitia promenade follows the rocky shore to a small beach. The Nemea wine region and Argos, one of the oldest towns in Greece, are also near.
Restaurants along the lanes serve seafood, lamb and local olive oil, and pastry shops sell loukoumi and almond sweets. The Argolid is orange and olive country. The town is lively on summer evenings, and the cooler months suit the climb up to Palamidi.
