Mykonos Town, or Chora, is a maze of narrow lanes, blue doors, tiny churches and bougainvillea, said to have been laid out to confuse pirates. Little Venice, where balconied houses hang over the sea, is the classic place for sunset, with a row of windmills on the hill above. The Paraportiani Church, a whitewashed cluster of chapels, is the island's most photographed building.

Beaches circle the island, from party-loving Paradise and Super Paradise to calmer Agios Sostis, Ornos and Psarou. Boats sail to the sacred island of Delos, birthplace of Apollo in myth, whose temples, mosaics and Terrace of the Lions make it one of Greece's most important archaeological sites. The inland village of Ano Mera has a monastery and traditional tavernas.

Island specialities include peppery kopanisti cheese, louza cured pork and fresh seafood. Summer is hot and buzzing, kept breezy by the meltemi wind, while late spring and early autumn are calmer and still warm, and winter is very quiet.
