Zakynthos lies off the west coast of the Peloponnese, a green island with a fertile central plain, olive groves and tall cliffs on its western side. The Venetians called it the flower of the east. Zakynthos Town, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953, spreads along the harbour with a long waterfront, arcades and Solomos Square, named after Dionysios Solomos, the poet whose verses became the Greek national anthem.
On the north-west coast, Navagio, or Shipwreck Beach, is a cove of white sand beneath tall cliffs with a rusting freighter beached on it, and it can be reached only by boat. Nearby, the Blue Caves around Cape Skinari glow with turquoise light. In the south, Laganas Bay is part of a national marine park where loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches.
Mandolato, a nougat of honey and almonds, and pasteli, a sesame and honey bar, are sold in the old town, and the white Verdea wine and olive oil come from the hills. Venetian rule left an Italian touch in the island's music and in the serenades called cantades. Beaches and boat trips fill the summer, and the turtle nesting season runs through it.
