Kos lies close to the Turkish coast, with Kos Town on its north shore, where a castle of the Knights of St John guards the harbour and palms line the waterfront. The town is also a living archaeological site, with Roman mosaics, the ancient agora and a restored Roman house. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, is said to have been born on the island, and a huge old plane tree in town is named after him.
Just outside town, the Asklepieion, an ancient healing sanctuary built in terraces on a hillside, looks across to the sea and to Turkey. Kos is flat and well suited to cycling, with long beaches at Tigaki and Marmari and the hilltop village of Zia on the slopes of Mount Dikeos. Boat trips go to Nisyros, a volcanic island with a crater to walk into, and nearby Kalymnos is known for sponge diving.
Local food is simple Aegean cooking: grilled fish and octopus, lamb, goat's cheese, and honey scented with thyme. Summer is hot, with the meltemi wind keeping the beaches fresh, and spring and autumn are mild and green.
