The island is the rim of an ancient volcano whose eruption left a vast caldera filled by the sea. On its edge, Fira, the main town, and the clifftop villages of Imerovigli and Firostefani cling to the slopes, while Oia, at the northern tip, is celebrated for its sunset views over windmills and whitewashed houses.

Boats sail into the caldera to the volcanic islet of Nea Kameni and the warm springs off Palea Kameni. In the south, Akrotiri preserves a Bronze Age town buried in ash, and the beaches are strikingly coloured: Red Beach below its cliffs, and the black sands of Perissa and Kamari on the east coast. Pyrgos, a hilltop village of winding lanes, and the ruins of Ancient Thira give quieter views.

The volcanic soil yields crisp Assyrtiko white wines from vines trained into low baskets, as well as cherry tomatoes, fava and capers. Late spring and early autumn bring warm seas and softer light, and in August the harvest gathers grapes from those basket-shaped vines. The cliff path from Fira to Oia is an unforgettable walk.
