Chania's old harbour is a crescent of tall Venetian houses facing a stone breakwater and a lighthouse rebuilt by the Egyptians in the nineteenth century. The domed Mosque of the Janissaries stands on the quay, left from the Ottoman centuries, and behind it narrow lanes in the Splantzia and Topanas quarters pass Venetian and Ottoman houses, churches and small workshops. The cross-shaped covered market sells cheese, honey and herbs.
The White Mountains rise behind the city. The Samaria Gorge, a long walk through a national park to the sea at Agia Roumeli, begins on a high plateau south of town, and beaches lie in every direction: the Balos lagoon on the Gramvousa peninsula, and Elafonisi, where the sand has a pink tint. The Akrotiri peninsula north-east of the city has monasteries and small coves.
Dakos, a barley rusk topped with tomato and soft white cheese, is the Cretan starter, and the boureki of Chania is a baked pie of courgette, potato and mizithra cheese. Raki, a clear spirit, ends a meal without being asked. Olive oil, thyme honey and wild greens shape the local cooking. Spring covers the hills in wildflowers.
