Experience the best of Corfu

Corfu is a green Ionian island off north-west Greece, with a Venetian old town, olive groves, rocky coves and a taste of French and British history.

Corfu Town, on the east coast, is listed by UNESCO for its Venetian, French and British layers, with narrow lanes of tall pastel houses between two Venetian fortresses. The Liston arcade, modelled on a Parisian street, runs along the Spianada, a huge square where cricket is still played, and the old British palace there now holds a museum of Asian art. The tiny islet of Vlacherna and Pontikonisi, Mouse Island, sit off the airport runway.

Outside town, the Achilleion palace was built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria around 1890, and the Mon Repos villa was the birthplace of Prince Philip. The west coast has cliff-backed coves at Paleokastritsa, the clifftop Byzantine fortress of Angelokastro, and beaches facing the sunset. Sidari's sandstone channels, Kassiopi's harbour and the hill villages of the north are other stops, and Paxos is a boat trip south.

Corfiot cooking has Venetian touches: pastitsada, spiced beef or rooster over pasta, sofrito of veal in garlic and white wine, and bourdeto, a peppery fish stew. Kumquat liqueur and local ginger beer, a legacy of British rule, are island specialities. Corfu is greener and wetter than most Greek islands in winter, so spring flowers are lush; May, June and September are the best months for beaches.
