Rhodes Old Town is a medieval city whose walls still stand, built by the Knights of St John. Their cobbled Street of the Knights climbs to the Palace of the Grand Master. The town is lived in, with restaurants, mosques and small shops in the lanes. The Colossus of Rhodes, a giant statue of the sun god Helios and one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, once stood somewhere in the city, though no trace remains.
Lindos, a whitewashed village on the east coast about fifty kilometres south, is crowned by an ancient acropolis above a sheltered bay. Closer to the city are the ruins of Kamiros, the hilltop of Filerimos and the Valley of the Butterflies, where moths gather in summer. In the far south, Prasonisi is a windy spot where two seas meet, and boats to the small island of Symi leave from the harbour.
Rhodian meals include grilled octopus, fresh fish, chickpea fritters called pitaroudia, lamb dishes and honey-and-sesame sweets. Local white wine comes from the high vineyards around Embonas, and souma is the local spirit. Rhodes has a long sunny season: May, June and September to October are warm without being too hot, July and August are hot, and winter is mild and rainy.
