Cephalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands, off Greece's west coast, a rugged island of limestone mountains, deep bays and olive groves. A strong earthquake in 1953 levelled most of its towns, and many were rebuilt in a plainer style; Fiskardo, in the north, was spared and keeps its Venetian-style houses around a small harbour. Argostoli, the capital, has a long waterfront and a stone causeway bridge across its lagoon.

Myrtos Beach, a long curve of white pebbles beneath steep cliffs, is one of the best-known beaches in Greece. Near Sami, the Melissani cave has a lake lit through a hole in the roof, and Drogarati is a cave of stalactites. Assos is a village on a peninsula crowned by a Venetian fortress. Mount Ainos, the highest peak on the island, is a national park of Greek fir, and Ithaca lies a short ferry ride across the strait.

Meat pie, kreatopita, is the island's pride, and the white wine Robola grows on the mountain slopes. Honey, cheese and almond sweets are sold at roadside stalls. Captain Corelli's Mandolin, the novel and the film, was set and shot here. Summers are hot and dry, and spring brings wildflowers.
