Naxos Town, the island's capital, is a whitewashed port with a Venetian castle on the hill above and narrow lanes winding through its centre. Out on the harbour islet stands the Portara, a huge marble doorway, all that remains of an unfinished temple of Apollo begun in the sixth century BC. The island is greener than most of its neighbours, with fertile valleys, springs and the Cyclades' highest peak, Mount Zas.
Inland villages such as Apeiranthos, built of marble with stone lanes, Halki, with its old houses and a Byzantine church, and Filoti, below Mount Zas, are strung along the mountains. Unfinished marble statues of kouroi lie in quarries near Apollonas and Flerio. The beaches of Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka run in a long arc down the west coast, and Paros, Mykonos and Santorini are a ferry ride away.
Naxos is known for its produce: potatoes, cheeses such as graviera and arseniko, olive oil, and kitron, a lemon-scented liqueur made from the citron tree. Summers are hot and dry, with strong meltemi winds from the north, and spring brings wildflowers to the hills.
