The Ribeira district lines the riverbank with colourful houses, cafés and boats, part of a UNESCO-listed old centre beneath the iron arches of the Dom Luís I Bridge. Above it, the São Bento station hall is covered in blue-and-white azulejo tiles, the Clérigos Tower rises above the rooftops, and the Sé cathedral stands on its hill.

Across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, the long-established port lodges open their cellars for tastings, and the hilltop monastery terrace gives the classic view of the city. A neo-Gothic bookshop famed for its sweeping staircase and the gilded interior of the Church of São Francisco are much-loved stops, and Serralves offers contemporary art and gardens. The Atlantic beaches of Foz do Douro lie at the river's mouth.

The francesinha, a meat-filled sandwich smothered in sauce, is the city's signature, alongside tripe stew and fresh fish from neighbouring Matosinhos. River cruises head upstream into the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley. Spring and early autumn are lovely, summer is warm with festivals, especially São João in June, and winter is mild but rainy.
