Albufeira was a fishing town under Moorish rule, its name coming from the Arabic for a lagoon, and its old town still climbs a hill above the water in a tangle of whitewashed alleys and arches. A tunnel leads down to the Fishermen's Beach, where boats once landed their catch, and the clock tower and parish church stand in the centre.

Sandy coves sit beneath cliffs of ochre rock to either side of town, among them Praia da Falésia to the east, with its striped red cliffs. Vilamoura's marina lies a short drive along the coast, and Carvoeiro and the Benagil sea cave, reached by boat, are to the west. Inland, Silves has a red sandstone castle, Loulé a market in a Moorish-style hall, and the Monchique hills are green and wooded.

Grilled sardines, cataplana, a seafood stew cooked in a hinged copper pan, and piri-piri chicken, which has its roots in nearby Guia, are the dishes of Albufeira. Dom Rodrigo, an egg-and-almond sweet, and medronho, a spirit from arbutus berries, come from the hills. The Atlantic stays cool for swimming even in August.
