Portimão sits at the mouth of the Arade River, and its long history of fishing and fish canning shaped the town. The old cannery now houses the town's museum, which records that trade, and the riverfront quay has rows of grills where sardines are cooked in the open air. Across the water is Ferragudo, a village of white houses with the Santa Catarina fortress at the river mouth.

Praia da Rocha, a wide beach backed by golden-red cliffs and rock stacks, lies just south of town, and Alvor's lagoon and boardwalk are to the west. Lagos and its sea-cliff grottoes lie about twenty kilometres west, Silves' castle is upstream on the Arade, and Monchique's wooded hills, which reach 900 metres, rise to the north with spa springs.

Grilled sardines, eaten with boiled potatoes and roasted peppers, are the defining dish, and the annual sardine festival in August celebrates them. Cataplana, a clam and pork stew, arroz de marisco, and smoked ham and honey from Monchique add variety.
