Experience the best of Sintra
Sintra is a hill town west of Lisbon, wrapped in misty forest and crowned by a Moorish castle, a colourful Romantic palace and mysterious gardens.

Sintra is a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape on the Serra de Sintra, a granite ridge that catches Atlantic mist and keeps the hills green and cool. Portuguese kings and nobles built summer palaces here. The Pena Palace, a painted fantasy of yellow and red towers, sits on the highest hill, while the Moorish Castle's walls climb the ridge nearby, and the old centre has the Sintra National Palace, recognisable by its two conical chimneys.
Quinta da Regaleira has gardens with a spiral well, tunnels and grottoes, and Monserrate Palace, an exotic villa in a botanical park, lies beyond the town. The Capuchos Convent, lined with cork, is a tiny hermitage in the forest. On the coast, Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and Cascais and Estoril lie to the south. Mafra's vast palace-convent is a short drive north.
Travesseiros, puff-pastry pillows filled with almond and egg cream, and queijadas, small cheese tarts, are the pastries Sintra is known for, and the local Colares wine comes from vines growing in sand by the sea. Fresh fish is served along the coast. The weather here is cooler and wetter than in Lisbon, with mist rolling over the hilltops even in summer.
