Setúbal District lies south of Lisbon on the far side of the Tagus, stretching from the estuary down the coast towards Sines in the Alentejo. Its heart is the Setúbal Peninsula, a land of limestone hills, pine woods, vineyards, fishing towns and long beaches. The city of Setúbal, on the Sado estuary, has a port, a market and the Convent of Jesus, with an early Manueline church. Palmela's hilltop castle looks over the vineyards and the estuary.

The Arrábida Natural Park is a ridge of white limestone cliffs dropping into clear sheltered bays such as Portinho da Arrábida. The Sado estuary is home to a small group of resident bottlenose dolphins, seen on boat trips, and the Tróia peninsula has long white beaches and Roman fish-salting ruins. Sesimbra, a fishing town under a Moorish castle, and Cabo Espichel, a cape with a lonely sanctuary and dinosaur footprints, lie on the Atlantic side. Cristo Rei, the giant statue facing Lisbon, stands at Almada.

Fish grilled on charcoal, cuttlefish fried in strips in Setúbal, and soft sheep's cheese from Azeitão are the local tastes, and Moscatel de Setúbal is a sweet fortified wine made in the district. Rice paddies and storks at Comporta add a quiet landscape. The beaches are at their best from June to September.
