Lagos lies on the western Algarve coast, where the River Bensafrim meets the Atlantic. Its old town is enclosed by 16th-century walls and has narrow lanes, whitewashed houses and the small Santo António church, whose interior is a mass of gilded baroque carving. Explorers sailed from the harbour in the 15th century in the age of Henry the Navigator, and a statue of the prince stands in the square. The former Slave Market recalls a dark chapter of the Age of Discovery.
Ponta da Piedade, a headland of golden cliffs, arches and sea stacks, can be explored by boat or kayak, and Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo are small beaches framed by rock. The long beach of Meia Praia runs east towards Alvor. Inland, the Monchique hills rise to pine and eucalyptus, and to the west Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente, the south-western tip of mainland Europe, are some forty kilometres away.
Grilled sardines, cataplana, a seafood stew cooked in a copper clam-shaped pan, and piri-piri chicken are Algarve classics, and medronho, a fruit spirit from the Monchique hills, ends many meals. Figs, almonds and carob feature in sweets. The Atlantic stays cool even in August.
