Faro is built around a marina and an old town enclosed by walls, entered through the neoclassical Arco da Vila. Inside, quiet lanes lead to the cathedral and to the Carmo Church, whose Chapel of Bones is lined with the skulls and bones of monks. The city feels more local than the resorts along the coast.

The Ria Formosa Natural Park, a maze of lagoons, salt flats and sandbars, protects flamingos and many wading birds, and boats leave the harbour for the sandy islands of Culatra, Farol and Deserta. Faro beach itself lies on a spit beside the airport. Olhão's fish market and cube-shaped houses are a short drive east, the pink rococo palace at Estoi lies north, and Tavira is half an hour away.

Seafood is the heart of the Algarve: grilled sardines, clams and oysters from the lagoon, and cataplana, a seafood stew cooked in a copper clam-shaped pan. Sweets are made from almonds, figs and egg yolk. The sun shines for much of the year, almond trees blossom in February, and May, June, September and October are warm without the heat of midsummer.
