Terceira lies in the central group of the Azores, an island of green pasture divided by black basalt walls. Angra do Heroísmo, the main town on the south coast, was once an important Atlantic port, and its old centre of pastel houses and churches is a UNESCO site. A fortress crowns Monte Brasil, the volcanic peninsula at its edge. Praia da Vitória, on the east coast, has the island's main sandy beach.
Algar do Carvão is a volcanic chimney and lava cave with a lake at its bottom, and Furnas do Enxofre has steaming fumaroles. The viewpoint at Serra do Cume looks over a patchwork of fields. At Biscoitos, the sea fills natural lava pools used for swimming. In summer, the Sanjoaninas festival fills Angra with parades, small chapels honour the Holy Spirit, and bulls are run on ropes through the streets.
Alcatra, beef baked in a clay pot with wine, linguiça sausage and massa sovada, a sweet bread, are the traditional foods. Biscoitos is known for its white wine, grown in lava-stone enclosures.
