Coimbra rises above the Mondego River in central Portugal and was the country's capital in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Its university, founded in 1290 and settled in Coimbra from 1537, is the oldest in Portugal, and the old campus on the hill is a UNESCO site with the gilded Joanina Library and a tall clock tower. Students still wear black academic capes.
The Sé Velha is a fortress-like Romanesque cathedral, and the Santa Cruz Monastery holds the tombs of Portugal's first two kings. Portugal dos Pequenitos is a park of miniature buildings, the Botanical Garden is a quiet green space, and Conímbriga, about fifteen kilometres south-west, is among the best-preserved Roman towns in the country. The Buçaco forest and the Atlantic beaches of Figueira da Foz are within reach.
Fado de Coimbra is traditionally sung by men in black student capes, at night in the old streets. Leitão assado, roast suckling pig from the Bairrada region, chanfana, goat stewed in red wine, and pastéis de Santa Clara, almond pastries, are local dishes. In May, the Queima das Fitas celebrates the end of the academic year.
