Ponta Delgada stands on the south coast of São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic. Its old centre is built of black volcanic stone and whitewashed walls, with the three-arched Portas da Cidade at the waterfront, the Church of São Sebastião and the Forte de São Brás. The Carlos Machado Museum holds natural history and art.
Inland, the twin lakes of Sete Cidades, one looking green and the other blue, lie in a vast crater, and Lagoa do Fogo fills another. The valley of Furnas has hot springs, steaming fumaroles and the garden of Terra Nostra Park. Gorreana has tea plantations on the north coast, pineapples grow in greenhouses, and hydrangeas line the roads in summer. Boat trips from the harbour search for whales and dolphins.
Cozido das Furnas, a stew cooked underground in volcanic steam, is the island's famous dish. Lapas, grilled limpets with butter and garlic, and Azorean beef come to the table, with bolo lêvedo, a sweet griddle bread, at breakfast. Showers pass through all year, which keeps the island green.
