Meteora is a forest of sandstone and conglomerate pillars, some hundreds of metres high, rising abruptly from the plain of Thessaly beside the town of Kalambaka. From the fourteenth century monks built monasteries on the summits, reaching them at first by ladders and rope nets, and six are still active. The Great Meteoron, Varlaam and Roussanou are among them, with frescoed chapels and views down the Pineios valley.

Hiking paths wind between the pillars, climbers scale the rock, and the villages of Kastraki and Kalambaka lie at the foot. The Pindus Mountains fill the horizon to the west, with the hill town of Metsovo, known for smoked cheese, about an hour's drive away, while Trikala, a market town on the Lithaios river, lies to the east.

Local tables offer hearty mountain food: savoury pies with wild greens, grilled meats, trahanas soup, cheeses and tsipouro, the grape spirit served with small plates. Spring covers the plain with wildflowers, and the golden light at sunrise and sunset suits the rocks best.
