Experience the best of Montreal

Montreal is a French-speaking island city on the St Lawrence River, with a cobbled old port, a mountain park and a lively food and festival scene.

Montreal stands on an island in the St Lawrence River, rising to Mount Royal, the wooded hill from which it takes its name. Old Montreal has cobbled streets, stone warehouses and Notre-Dame Basilica, whose deep-blue vaulted interior is covered in gold stars. Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of New York's Central Park, laid out the park on the mountain, and a lookout over the downtown towers sits near its top.

French and English mix in the streets of the Plateau, where outside spiral staircases climb the rowhouses, and the Jean-Talon Market sells produce, cheese and flowers. An underground network of walkways links downtown buildings and metro stations. The Olympic Stadium of 1976 stands beside the Botanical Garden, and a cycle path follows the Lachine Canal west from the Old Port. Ottawa and Quebec City are each a few hours' drive away.

Poutine, fries with cheese curds and gravy, belongs to Quebec, and Montreal bagels are boiled in honey water and baked in wood-fired ovens. Smoked meat sandwiches and maple syrup are local staples, and bakeries sell croissants beside the delis. Festivals crowd the warm months, among them a large jazz festival in late June, and in winter the snow lies for months.
