The Niagara River plunges over the Niagara Escarpment in three falls: the curved Horseshoe Falls, mostly on the Canadian side, and the American and Bridal Veil Falls across the border in New York. Boats carry passengers to the foot of the Horseshoe Falls, and walkways follow the rim of the gorge. After dark the water is lit in changing colours.
Downriver, the Niagara Gorge has a whirlpool and trails, and the Niagara Parkway runs north past orchards to Niagara-on-the-Lake, a small town where the river meets Lake Ontario. The reconstructed Fort George there saw fighting in the War of 1812. The region is Ontario's wine country, known for Riesling and for icewine, made from grapes frozen on the vine. Toronto is about ninety minutes away by road.
Peaches and cherries ripen in summer and are sold from roadside stands, and wineries serve lunch among the vines. Butter tarts are the classic Ontario sweet. The grape harvest in autumn is the busiest time in the vineyards.
