Stanley Park, a vast forested peninsula beside downtown, is circled by the seawall, a waterside path loved by walkers and cyclists, and dotted with totem poles at Brockton Point. Granville Island's public market, artisan studios and theatres sit beneath a bridge across False Creek, and Gastown, the oldest neighbourhood, has cobbled streets and its famous steam clock.

The North Shore mountains rise straight across the harbour. The Capilano and Lynn Canyon suspension bridges sway above deep gorges, and Grouse Mountain offers hiking, views and winter skiing. Chinatown, the beaches of Kitsilano and the Museum of Anthropology, with its monumental First Nations carvings, show other sides of the city.

Vancouver eats superbly, from Pacific salmon and spot prawns to outstanding Asian cooking, especially in neighbouring Richmond. Summer is warm and mostly dry, perfect for the outdoors, while winter is mild and rainy in the city with snow on the nearby slopes.
