Experience the best of Calgary
Calgary is the Alberta city where the prairies meet the Rocky Mountain foothills, a place of rodeo traditions, river pathways and big-sky sunshine.

Calgary sits on the Bow and Elbow rivers, with the snowy Rockies visible to the west on clear days. The Calgary Tower, from 1968, is the older landmark of a skyline now crowded with glass towers, and Fort Calgary marks the Mounted Police post that started the town in 1875. Prince's Island Park and the curving Peace Bridge are favourite spots along the river, and Heritage Park recreates an early prairie settlement.
Each July the Calgary Stampede fills ten days with a rodeo, chuckwagon races and parades, and Olympic Park recalls the 1988 Winter Games. The Calgary Zoo and the shops of Inglewood are quieter pleasures. The mountains are close: Canmore and Banff National Park lie to the west, Kananaskis Country has trails and lakes, and the Royal Tyrrell Museum among the dinosaur badlands of Drumheller makes a day trip to the north-east.
Alberta beef is the local pride, from steakhouses to burgers, and Calgary claims the Caesar cocktail, made with clam-tomato juice, and ginger beef. Winters are cold and sunny, interrupted by chinook winds that can warm the city within hours; summers are warm with long evenings. Late June to early September is best for outdoor plans, and in winter the Rocky Mountain ski resorts are a drive away.
