Experience the best of Banff
Banff is a small mountain town inside Canada's first national park, set among the Rocky Mountain peaks of Alberta with hot springs, lakes and wildlife.

The town of Banff sits in the Bow Valley at about 1,400 metres, with Mount Rundle's sloping ridge rising over the main street and Cascade Mountain at the other end. It began as a railway town beside hot springs, and the Cave and Basin National Historic Site marks the discovery that led to Canada's first national park. A gondola climbs Sulphur Mountain for views, and the Bow Falls and a château-style hotel add to the river scenery.
The park spreads far beyond town. Lake Minnewanka is a few minutes away, Johnston Canyon follows a catwalk path to waterfalls, and Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, with their turquoise glacial water, lie roughly an hour to the north-west. The Icefields Parkway continues north through the mountains towards Jasper. Elk, bighorn sheep and sometimes bears are seen from the roads, so watch from a distance.
Mountain restaurants serve elk, bison and Alberta beef alongside hearty soups, and hot chocolate comes with the cold air. Summer, from June to September, suits hiking and canoeing, golden larch trees colour the high passes in late September, and winter brings skiing and frozen lakes. Spring is quieter, with snow lingering on the trails.
