Experience the best of Quebec City

Quebec City is a French-speaking walled city above the St Lawrence River, with cobbled lanes, a grand hilltop château and a historic old town.

Quebec City stands on a cliff above the St Lawrence River, and its old town, a UNESCO-listed warren of stone houses, church spires and steep cobbled streets, is the only walled city north of Mexico. Samuel de Champlain founded a settlement here in 1608, and the Château Frontenac, a copper-roofed grand hotel, dominates the skyline above Dufferin Terrace.

Lower Town holds Place Royale and the Petit Champlain quarter, with its shop-lined stairways. On the Plains of Abraham, now a large park, British and French forces fought in 1759 for the fate of New France, and the Citadelle, a star fort still in military use, stands at its edge. Outside the city, Montmorency Falls drop higher than Niagara, the Île d'Orléans is dotted with farms and orchards, and the basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré draws pilgrims.

French cooking shapes the table: tourtière, a spiced meat pie, poutine, crêpes, and maple syrup in desserts and glazes, with cheeses from Charlevoix and ice cider from nearby orchards. The Winter Carnival brings ice sculptures and parades to the depths of winter. Warm summers and bright autumn colours put outdoor tables along every lane.
