Experience the best of Halifax
Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, is an Atlantic harbour city of seafaring history, a hilltop citadel and a long waterfront boardwalk.

Halifax was founded in 1749 as a British naval base, and the harbour is still its heart. Citadel Hill, topped by a star-shaped fort, looks over downtown and the water, and a boardwalk of piers, galleries and cafés follows the waterfront. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic covers shipwrecks, the Titanic, whose recovered victims were brought to Halifax, and the great explosion of 1917.
The Halifax Public Gardens, a Victorian park with a bandstand, ponds and formal flowerbeds, is a calm spot in the middle of the city, and Pier 21, the old immigration hall, tells the story of people who arrived in Canada by sea. Peggy's Cove, a fishing village with a lighthouse on bare granite, lies along the coast to the south-west, Lunenburg, a UNESCO-listed colonial port, is further along the South Shore, and the Annapolis Valley grows apples and makes wine.
The Atlantic supplies lobster, scallops, mussels and haddock, and chowder and fish cakes appear on many menus, with Nova Scotia wine and craft beer to go with them. The donair, a spiced-meat wrap in a sweet sauce, is Halifax's own invention and the late-night favourite. Fog often drifts in off the Atlantic, and the autumn colour inland is bright.
