Jasper sits at about 1,060 metres on the Athabasca River, ringed by peaks, in the largest national park of the Canadian Rockies. The town grew around the railway in the early twentieth century, and elk graze on its lawns and wander its streets. The park, together with its neighbours, forms the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage site, and it is one of the largest dark-sky preserves in the world.
Maligne Lake, with the tiny Spirit Island, is reached by a winding road past Medicine Lake and the narrow limestone slot of Maligne Canyon. Closer to town lie the green waters of Pyramid and Patricia lakes, and the Whistlers Mountain cable car climbs above the treeline. The Icefields Parkway runs south to Lake Louise past Athabasca Falls and the Columbia Icefield, and Mount Edith Cavell and its Angel Glacier rise to the south of town.
Alberta beef, bison and elk are staples of mountain menus, with craft beer and hot chocolate after a day on the trail. Summer is the season for the lakes and long hikes, September is quieter with golden aspen, and in winter the Marmot Basin ski area and frozen waterfalls take over.
