Milton Keynes was designated as a new town in 1967 and built on farmland and villages in north Buckinghamshire, planned around a grid of roads with roundabouts, wide green corridors and a network of shared walking and cycling paths known as redways. The older towns of Bletchley, Wolverton, Stony Stratford and Newport Pagnell were absorbed into it. A herd of concrete cows, made by an artist in the 1970s, is the town's best-known sculpture.
Bletchley Park, the country house where codebreakers worked during the Second World War, is now a museum, with the National Museum of Computing on the same site. Willen Lake has a Peace Pagoda on its shore, and the Grand Union Canal runs through the town. Woburn Abbey and its safari park lie to the south-east, the landscape gardens of Stowe to the north-west, and Silverstone circuit to the west.
Restaurants of many cuisines cluster in the central Theatre District, and the Buckinghamshire countryside around offers village pubs and Aylesbury duck. The parks are green all year, and summers are mild.
