Experience the best of York
York is a walled cathedral city in northern England, a place of Roman and Viking history, medieval lanes and a vast Gothic minster.

York Minster, among the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, towers over the city, and its stained glass includes the Great East Window, one of the biggest areas of medieval glass in the country. Medieval walls, the longest in England, encircle the old centre and can be walked along the top. The Shambles, a narrow lane of leaning timber-framed buildings, was once the street of butchers.
York was the Roman fortress of Eboracum, where Constantine was proclaimed emperor in AD 306, and the Vikings later made it their capital, Jorvik, a story told in a museum that rebuilds a Viking street. Clifford's Tower, a thirteenth-century keep, stands on a steep grassy mound, and the National Railway Museum shows the record-breaking steam locomotive Mallard. Castle Howard, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales lie within reach, as does the coast at Whitby.
Tea rooms and pubs set the pace of a visit, with roast beef and Yorkshire pudding on the Sunday table and real ale on the bar. York has a long chocolate-making heritage, and its sweet shops show it. Ghost walks run after dark through the lanes, flower baskets brighten the summer streets, and the Christmas season fills the centre with markets.
