Experience the best of Birmingham
Birmingham is England's second city, a Midlands centre of canals, Victorian civic buildings, jewellery workshops and Pre-Raphaelite art.

Birmingham grew from a market town into a city of a thousand trades during the Industrial Revolution, and its canals, which fan out from the basin at Gas Street, still thread through the centre lined with bars and restored warehouses. Victoria Square has the Council House and the Town Hall, the Library of Birmingham stands beside Centenary Square, and the Bullring shopping centre sits below the spire of St Martin's Church.
The Museum and Art Gallery holds one of the best collections of Pre-Raphaelite paintings in the country, and the Barber Institute has works from the Italian Renaissance to the Impressionists. The Jewellery Quarter, with its workshops and museum, still makes jewellery, and Bournville, a model village built by the Cadbury family for its chocolate workers, lies to the south. Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon are within an hour's drive.
The balti, a curry cooked and served in a thin steel dish, is closely associated with the city's South Asian restaurants, and the Chinese Quarter, the market halls of the Bull Ring and many other kitchens add to the mix. Black Sabbath formed in the city, and live music is still a large part of its evenings. The weather is mild, with the warmest weeks in July and August.
