Experience the best of Manchester
Manchester, the former cotton capital of north-west England, is a city of red-brick mills, canals, football, music and big museums.

Manchester grew in the nineteenth century as the centre of the cotton trade, and the warehouses, mills and canals of that age still shape the city. The Gothic Revival Town Hall by Alfred Waterhouse dominates Albert Square, the John Rylands Library holds a Victorian reading hall of carved stone and stained glass, and Castlefield has a Roman fort beside the canal basin. The Science and Industry Museum stands at the oldest surviving passenger railway station in the world.
The Northern Quarter has independent shops and record stores, Chinatown and the Curry Mile in Rusholme reflect the city's many communities, and Salford Quays across the water has The Lowry arts centre and the Imperial War Museum North. Old Trafford and the Etihad Stadium are home to the two big football clubs, and the National Football Museum is in the centre. The Peak District National Park lies less than an hour to the south-east.
Manchester tart, a jam-and-custard pastry coated in coconut, and Eccles cakes, flaky currant pastries from nearby Eccles, are the local sweets, while curries and noodles hold their own on the menus. Joy Division, the Smiths and Oasis all came from here. Rain is a regular visitor in any month.
